ELECTROLYSIS FAQS

What is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis is a treatment method for permanent hair removal and also removal of skin blemishes.

Dr Charles Michel was an Ophthalmologist who discovered and reported the first clinical findings of Electrolysis in 1875.

He used galvanic electrolysis to remove an ingrown eyelash (trichiasis) in a patient and subsequently discovered that once the lye (sodium hydroxide (NaOH)), that formed as a result of a chemical reaction with direct current, successfully damaged and weakened the follicles resulting in permanent hair removal.

This treatment method has been refined since and is medically recognised and approved for permanent hair removal.

How does Electrolysis work?

A very fine, flexible probe is inserted into each hair follicle and a small current is released which destroys the follicle. The treated hair is then removed with a tweezer. Aftercare advice is provided at consultation and after each session; it must always be followed.

The end results of electrolysis is permanent removal, however it is a progressive treatment method. Each individual hair needs to be treated more than once, which results in hair becoming finer and also lighter in colour. To achieve results, it is recommended to follow treatment plans.

How long does it take/how many treatments will I need?

This isn't a straight forward answer as firstly only 25%-30% of hair is visible at any time meaning that there is a significant percentage of hair lying dormant under the skin surface.

Secondly, there are numerous factors to consider when it comes to hair growth from the physiological variables, genetics, (underlying) medical conditions and medications, and environmental.

Thirdly, all hairs on the body have variable growth cycles depending on where they are situated, for example upper lip, underarms to legs and neck.

This is why is regular appointments are needed initially, as all hair are not growing and visible simultaneously, but will quickly appear to reduce in growth and thickness.

Where (on the body) can you have electrolysis?

Hair can be removed from anywhere on the body, on any skin colour and hair type (The exception is mucosal areas such as inner nose and inner genitalia.).

Who does the electrolysis?

I am:

* a Sterex trained Advanced Electrolysis Practitioner

* a member of the British Institute and Association of Electrolysis (BIAE)

* a registered practitioner with Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council (TMBC) / Tameside public register (Search 'Electrolysis': Public register: https://publicaccess.tameside.gov.uk/online-applications)

For trans clients wishing to look into electrolysis for hair removal, there is information available from your local Gender Identity Clinic (GIC) and Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), e.g Tameside and Glossop CCG.

Type 'Electrolysis' in the search box and you will be guided to the Effective Use of Resources policies.

Is electrolysis uncomfortable?

A sensation is most likely to be noted during treatment and can be described as a tingling sensation or a slight sting. Discomfort during electrolysis varies between individuals and is dependent on individual tolerance threshold, treatment setting/modality and other factors.

As a practitioner, I am trained to work within the optimal settings and client comfort tolerance, which is established during the consultation. Do not hesitate to let me know how you feel during your treatment.
